Christmas comes to Honiton

Honiton has a packed programme of events to get everyone into the spirit of Christmas this year.
To kick start the festivities Honiton and District Chamber of Commerce and Industry will be hosting its annual carol service at St Paul’s Church, starting at 5.30pm, on this evening (Friday, December 6) followed by the switching on of the Christmas tree lights.
The fun continues into Saturday (December 7) with Honiton Christmas Carnival, which starts from Ottery Moor Lane at 5.30pm.
The Themla Hulbert Gallery is holding free story telling and art activity family drop-in sessions from 10.30am and again at 2pm.
On Sunday (December 8) Honiton’s Bygone Christmas event will be spreading more Christmas cheer from 10am to 4pm. There will be market stalls and other activities going on throughout the town.
There will be performances from Honiton Town Band, Honiton Twirlstars, The Blackdown Samba Band, and the Ukulele Band from noon onwards.
Honiton Wine Bar and Boston Tea Party will also be hosting live music.
Organiser Wendy Le Masurier said: “It will be an opportunity to showcase Honiton’s independent shops, join us and enjoy live music, local food and tasty gifts, homemade crafts, jewellery, art and antiques.”
Family activities are being held at Honiton Pottery, the Thelma Hulbert Gallery and there will be birds of prey at Honiton Baptist Church.
Plantagenesta, the family history shop, in High Street, is hosting a reindeer to boost funds for Christmas lights.
Visitors can call into the shop and pick up their reindeer antlers and reindeer rooftop rota. Entrants must ramble down the High Street and complete their rooftop rota by spotting the items on it.
There will be a second chance to see Honiton Twirlstars in action outside Plantagenesta from 11.30am and the Blackdown Samba Band from noon.
There will also be a further performance of the samba band at Honiton Baptist Church from 1pm and again from 12.30pm at the Thelma Hulbert Gallery. Honiton Twirlstars will also be performing at the gallery from noon.
The event will be brought to a close with a Christingle Service at St Paul’s Church at 4pm.
Students at Honiton Community College will be holding a Christmas market and craft fair on Saturday, December 14, from 10am until 4pm, at the college to raise money for their World Challenge trip.
Honiton Baptist Church will be holding its Christmas fete on Saturday, December 14, from 9am until 4pm.
