Colyton turned back the clocks to 1644 on Saturday, June 10, as scenes from the English Civil War were enacted.
The dramatic recreation of the bloody battles of the period was brought to life by the Taunton Garrison Living History Group – a costumed event featuring Cavaliers and Roundheads.
Billed as ‘A Day in the Life of Colyton Townsfolk in the English Civil War’ it also included some fun events, like a street market, food outlets, activities for children and general entertainment for all.
According to Colyton Parish History Society the town appears not to have taken sides during the civil war but nonetheless found itself on a route between opposing forces.
There were many skirmishes in the streets and disruption to its population. Colcombe Castle, garrisoned for the King, was much destroyed in a reprisal raid by parliamentary troops.
