Crowds dig deep to give the town's big week a shining finale despite the economic gloom

Money may be scarce these days but entertainment is never in short supply at Colyton carnival.

And despite the recession, appreciative crowds dug deep to support the town’s big day on Saturday.

The well supported Dolphin Street market raised £5,093 while lunches and teas brought in a further £393 and £131 respectively.

The illuminated procession, in the evening, again saw hundreds pack the narrow streets to cheer on the colourful floats and although entries were slightly down collections raised £1,758 – bringing the day’s gross total to a very worthwhile £7,375.

Secretary Caroline Collier was well pleased, considering the difficult times, and told The Herald the quality of floats was extremely high.

She added: “We want to pass on our thanks to everyone who has helped us through the week and everyone who has supported our events, without this support we would not have a successful carnival.”
