Grammar School teams battle wind and rain to successfully complete tough Dartmoor challenge
Colyton Grammar School has a proud history of involvement in Ten Tors Challenge and this year four teams successfully completed the tough weekend trek.
Teams of six have to walk 35, 45 or 55 miles across Dartmoor,
leaving at 7am on Saturday, camping over overnight on the moor and returning to Okehampton Camp by 5pm on Sunday.
In a spectacular display of fitness and team spirit, the first of the two Colyton 45 mile teams arrived back eight minutes before the 35 milers, despite having done the extra distance. They were only narrowly beaten, being one of the first teams on their route.
As a consequence of the good reputation Colyton has in the competition, they were allowed to have an additional 45 mile team, which enabled an additional six students to take part. They again exceeded expectations, arriving back with 2.5 hours to spare and fully justifying their selection.
The 55 mile team achieved the unbelievable feat of walking over 35 miles in one day, continuing to walk for 14 hours until it was nearly dark. They arrived back at the quite staggering time of 13.51, less than three hours after the 35 milers. Some of the team even had the energy to jump around at the end to celebrate!
