Tom Orchard, a year 12 student at Colyton Grammar School, has been selected from over 1,200 applicants to join the prestigious Sutton Trust Programme in the USA.
The programme provides extensive support to talented state school students seeking a gateway into United States universities.
The selection process involved an application with essays, grades, a school reference and video interview. Tom, 17, from Lyme Regis, said that the process ‘took his entire Christmas holidays, but was definitely worth it’.
As one of the 150 students selected, Tom has access to a vast number of resources.
He said: “I am supported by some of the most dedicated and talented students and counsellors from both sides of the Atlantic.”
The programme consists of a week-long visit to the United States at the end of July, when the selected students will be staying at the world-renowned Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Boston.
They will have the opportunity to attend master-classes at Ivy League institutions, such as Dartmouth College and Harvard University.
