Grammar school’s recycling initiatives praised by assessor

Helping to safeguard the environment has earned more praise for Colyton Grammar School.

It has been told it can fly the Eco-Schools Green Flag for a further two years, following an assessment just before the Easter break.

The school has a long track record of working on environmental issues, which have been sustained since the first green flag was awarded in July, 2010.

The assessor was impressed with both the approach to energy production and energy efficiency in the buildings and grounds, and the series of campaigns run by the students to reduce and recycle waste and to be more energy efficient. In the last year further solar panels have been installed, plastic bottles are now recycled throughout the school and food waste is soon to be composted on site.

Rex Stidwell, assistant head, said: “Educating students about sustainability issues and our impact on the environment is fundamental in creating responsible individuals who will live in a far more energy insecure world in the future.

“This second green flag is a great marker for the hard work of all the staff and students at Colyton Grammar.”
