A complaint was lodged with Honiton's deputy mayor, Councillor Peter Fleming, who raised the issue at the town council's December meeting.
Two days later, a Honiton woman was shocked to see an advertisement in this newspaper for a flat in Exmouth her mother had been allocated more than a week before.
But a spokesman for the council said: "Of late, we have had several vacant properties in Midway, Exmouth, and we can assure the new tenant that the property advertised is not the same one that she has been allocated.
"Tenants need have no concerns that properties allocated to them will appear in the advertisement."
Karen Taylor, 24, of Lee Close, is positive the flat she saw advertised was the same one her mother had been allocated.
"I am concerned people are bidding for properties that have already been allocated," she said.
Ms Taylor is doubly concerned, because she is anxious to move back to Exmouth herself. She is currently living with her three children and brother in a two-bedroom flat. "I am aware of three properties that have been advertised but already allocated," she told the Herald.
