A SEATON town councillor has defended the town clerk following recent criticism about his work.

Cllr Julia Roebuck read out a statement during the monthly meeting, claiming a minority of people were 'waging a war' against David Mears.

She added she was appalled by the 'personal attacks' on Mr Mears' character in the press.

She said: "David is not a political football to be kicked about whenever people don't agree with a decision the council has made.

"He is an employee of this council and should be treated with respect by everyone, including the people he serves.

"May I remind everyone that it is councillors, not David, who make the decisions. His job is to carry out what the council decides."

Her comments come following a number of letters published in a newspaper, which questioned his ability to carry out his role.

Ms Roebuck said Mr Mears was one of a few fully qualified clerks in East Devon and worked hard for the town.

She added: "The town council is the first tier of government here and there are some projects that only it can undertake for the improvement of the town.

"By continually attacking David, you divert his time away from projects that would help Seaton.
