Axminster League of Friends and NHS Trust given time to recruit more nurses

Court proceedings to determine the immediate future of inpatient beds at Axminster Hospital have been adjourned to allow time for staffing issues to be resolved.

Members of the Northern Devon NHS Healthcare Trust attended a hearing at the Royal Courts of Justice in London in relation to its decision to temporarily transfer of inpatient services from Axminster to Seaton due to significant staffing and patient safety concerns.

The hearing was adjourned by the judge, Mrs Justice Patterson, to give the Trust time to work with Axminster Hospital League of Friends to establish whether it can recruit enough registered nurses to be able to reopen the beds at Axminster. The Trust is required to report back to the court on Wednesday April 15 to update on progress.

Alison Diamond, chief executive of the Trust, said: “We have repeated our commitment to working with the League of Friends to try to reopen the beds at Axminster as soon as possible, provided it is safe to do so.”
