Police say two men wearing high-vis coats visited an address at Whitebridges and told the occupant about bogus gas works.

Burglars struck at a Honiton home after reportedly telling the occupants bogus gas works were set to take place.

Police say two men wearing high-vis coats visited an address at Whitebridges last Thursday (January 25) between 4.20pm and 4.40pm and told the residents about the works.

They then entered the property without showing identification.

A spokesman for Honiton’s policing team said one man spoke to the occupants while the other man went upstairs and searched the rooms.

He added: “The men are described as white males, and one had a multi-coloured grey jumper on.

“When asked if they had any identification they left saying they would return with it.

“If anyone has seen the males in the area at this time and can assist with the investigation of this crime please call in 101 and quote crime number CR/007706/18.”

It is the second time a distraction burglary of this kind has been reported in East Devon in the last few months.

A burglar reportedly snatched a pensioner’s purse from their Axminster home by pretending to be a contractor working on telephone lines so he could enter the property.
