A DIVER died today after losing consciousness under water following a trip in Lyme Bay.

Coastguards tried to resuscitate the 65-year-ol, who was airlifted to the Dorchester hospital A and E - where he was declared dead.

Reports said he had been exploring the wreck of 'Moidart' with other divers, but got into difficulty when he was two metres below the surface. He had been under water for about 15 minutes and had indicated he was about to surface.

The crew of the vessel called an alarm and Portland coastguards and the Lyme Regis RNLI lifeboat were called to the scene at around 12noon.

Ros Evans, watch manager at Portland Coastguard, said: "The man was not diving with a particular club and his buddy was able to assist in attempting to resuscitate his colleague."

He extended his sympathies to family and friends of the diver.
