Honiton Community College students Zoe Allen and Lucy Lear complete the school’s very first Duke of Edinburgh award scheme.

Students at Honiton Community College have completed the school’s very first Duke of Edinburgh award scheme.

Zoe Allen and Lucy Lear were presented with their bronze awards on Wednesday after nine months of hard work.

The college introduced the Duke of Edinburgh award scheme in September 2011 and currently have 13 students who have started work towards their bronze awards.

Zoe and Lucy, both aged 15, took part in a number of different activities including cooking, photography, and first aid, and also took part in an expedition walk.

“I am really proud,” says Zoe. “I tell everyone that I’ve got it.”

They both aspire to more awards.

The head of PE, Andy Taylor, said: “The ethos of the scheme is to enable every young person from whatever background to undertake Duke of Edinburgh and to succeed, regardless of any personal barriers or disabilities. The scheme will inspire, guide and support our students in their self-development and recognise as well as reward their achievements.”

He added: “I believe our current bronze award group can and will progress to achieve their silver awards and hopefully gold awards beyond that.

“It is fantastic to be able to celebrate Zoe and Lucy’s achievements for being the first two students to achieve their bronze award at Honiton Community College.”
