EAST Devon MP Hugo Swire is today (Thursday) leading a delegation of Devon MPs and district councillors to see Rosie Winterton MP, Minister for Local Government, to demand an end to the proposed local government reorganisation in Devon.

Mr Swire, who has, for some time, been calling for an end to the uncertainty over Devon's future, sought this meeting which will be held at the Department for Communities and Local Government.

Other Devon MPs and councillors are expected to attend, including Geoffrey Cox QC MP (Torridge and West Devon), Anthony Steen MP (Totnes) and Gary Streeter MP (Devon South West), Cllr Ray Franklin (East.Devon), Cllr Mike Hicks (South Hams), Cllr Andrew Leadbetter (Topsham), Cllr James McInnes (W.Devon), Cllr James Morrish (Torridge), Cllr Peter Hare-Scott (Mid Devon) and Cllr David Brailey (North Devon).

Mr Swire said: "The Shadow Minister for Local Government and Planning Bob Neill MP has clearly stated that if there was a change of Government, the Conservatives will take all steps to reverse that decision, even if the present Government have had the temerity to pass it into law and even if such a change required legislation.

"With the General Election just around the corner it is clearly now time to call an end to this protracted, costly and unpopular proposed local government reorganisation and the Government must finally see sense over the matter.
