The Summer of 2018 has been better than many - so far.

Hopefully, with school holidays in full swing, it will be kind, the sun will shine, the stunning Devon beaches will play host to the many visitors and local residents alike. Few counties boast better and more varied beaches than Devon and the East Devon coast has the most varied of all within the World Heritage Jurassic Coastline.

Exmouth plays host to many families where the town and beach cater for all ages.

For those without a car, the town is connected by rail via Exeter to the main rail network which widens its attraction and viability as a destination.

In contrast, the fishing village of Beer has a steep shingle beach bustling with fishing boats and the long pebbly shoreline at Branscombe is best for fossil hunting and quietly lazing in the sunshine. The beach shop will provide all the sustenance needed!

So where to live? As ever lifestyle (and budget) dictate, but the options are varied and plentiful.

Urban living in Exmouth, Sidmouth and Seaton or a rural lifestyle in Salcombe Regis, Branscombe or Beer. None are far from good local facilities and all enjoy views from Portland Bill to the South Devon coastline, as far as Start Point on a really clear day (maybe with binoculars!!)

Many people ask for direct beach access from their home. A demand that can rarely be met. But there are plenty of options to buy in all budgets, just a short walk from the sea.

W2 Estates (01395 271800) are selling 21 Bicton Street, Exmouth. A period terraced home where internal viewing is necessary to appreciate the extent of the accommodation including the raised, private, glass-screened sun terrace. Don’t judge a book by its cover - look inside!

In Sidmouth, Victoria James (01395 275556) is selling Anchorage, Laskeys Lane. Now there’s a stunning coastal view. Elevated on the favoured east side of town, this family house extends to six bedrooms, with potential annexe and large south-facing gardens. It may be an uphill walk from the beach but the view will more than compensate!

Fortnam Smith and Banwell in Seaton (01297 23939) are the agents for a stunning, contemporary block of new build apartments. Built to sustainable, eco-friendly credentials literally across the road from the beach the two bedroom apartments benefit from south facing balconies and secure parking with lifts to all floors.

As ever, waterside or countryside, East Devon has the cream of the county - “it’s all about coming home”.
