It hardly seems possible that Christmas is upon us again!

Despite the instant world of technology, Christmas retains the magic for families of a time to take a breath and share time-honoured traditions.

The romantic image of sitting round the fireside may be a step too far for the millennial generation but put a screen in front them with a good film and they’ll be there!

Whilst the family home may be a draw to many, others crave enjoying the season in a different environment - escaping the routine. Heading for Devon is a great option and may even inspire thoughts of a permanent move. East Devon in winter sunshine cannot be beaten - a walk along the cliff tops of the Jurassic Coast on Christmas morning builds an appetite for the lunch ahead -whether in one of the award-winning restaurants or hotels or round the family table. The county caters for the foodies with numerous Michelin star restaurants, amazing pubs (with real log fires) and a vast array of delicatessens and farm shops selling locally produced food for those preferring to be their own chef.

Staying with the theme of romantic Christmas venues, buyers of period properties will always find amazing opportunities. Copplestones in Sidbury is a Grade 2 newly thatched cottage with immaculate accommodation -including a ground floor bedroom suite – woodburners set in open fireplaces, electric Aga, double garage and secluded cottage gardens. Humberts (01404 42456) are the selling agents.

Dolish Farmhouse, Luppitt, is a restored stone farmhouse with four bedrooms and secondary accommodation set around a courtyard giving a Mediterranean feeling. Standing in nearly four acres with orchard and paddock with barns having potential for conversion it makes a great family home and Christmas venue! Stags (01404 45885) are the agents to call.

Another charming cottage (formerly two) is Pinewood Cottage, Cotleigh. Constructed of flint and stone the surprisingly spacious accommodation is beautifully presented. The focal point is the kitchen with electric Aga (a must), not missing the reception rooms with open fires and cosy cottage feel throughout. Greenslade Taylor Hunt (01404 46222) will have all the details for viewing.

The Christmas markets in East Devon towns are not to be missed, where you can stock the larders for the festive period. So, visit Devon for Christmas and you might just find yourself staying permanently - ‘it’s all about coming home’.
