TRADERS' hopes of boosting business in Honiton in the run-up to Christmas have been dashed.Their appeals to East Devon District Council for free shoppers' parking on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays through December have met with a straight "No".In a statement, issued to the Herald on Monday, a spokesperson for the council said: "No, we will not be offering free parking at this time of year."Car parking revenue plays an important part in helping us deliver services economically to the residents of East Devon and to lose it, even for a short period of time, would undermine our ability to maintain a low rate of council tax and deliver those services effectively."Honiton Town Council last week backed calls for free parking from members of Honiton and District Chamber of Commerce and Industry.A Midweek Herald web poll has revealed huge support for free parking.Of those who voted, 80 per cent were in favour and 20 per cent against.Have your say on this topic by visiting the Herald's website.Turn to page 7.
