An elderly motorist has died in a collision which closed the A-road between Honiton and Cullompton for more than three hours.

The 82-year-old man died following a single-vehicle collision on the A373 at Stoneyford, Cullompton, yesterday morning (Thursday).

Emergency services were called just after 11am after the silver Peugeot 308 left the road and was in collision with a tree.

A spokesman for Devon and Cornwall Police said: “The driver, the only occupant and from the Cullompton area, sustained serious injuries and was assisted by members of the public and an off-duty paramedic before emergency services arrived.

“Sadly, the man died at the scene.”

The A373 was closed for three-and-a-half hours while a forensic examination of the scene took place.

Officers from the Alliance Roads Policing Team, along with a specialist collision investigator and a scenes of crime officer, attended the scene.

Police are investigating the circumstances of the collision and appealing for any witnesses to contact them.
