A public meeting in Lyme Regis on Friday (June 10) will hear a Tory and a Labour MP joining forces over Europe.

Conservative Oliver Letwin, who represents West Dorset, and Ben Bradshaw, the Member of Parliament for Exeter, will tell an audience at Woodmead Halls why they both think Britain should remain in the EU.

Their contributions will be followed by a question and answer session giving the audience the opportunity to participate.

Rene Wyndham, media consultant and international moderator, who lives in Uplyme, will chair the meeting. The doors open at 7pm and the meeting begins at 7.30pm . Admission is free.

The meeting will be the second organised in Lyme Regis by local volunteers for the Britain Stronger in Europe campaign.

One of the volunteers, Richard Bronk, said: “It is an exciting moment for the town to be hosting such an event. The EU referendum represents the most important choice this country has made for a generation, and we are lucky to be able to hear first hand the case for remain from two such high profile speakers.”

Both Oliver Letwin and Ben Bradshaw have held senior cabinet positions and have long experience in government.

While Mr Bronk expects the two MPs will make subtly different cases for remaining in the EU, given their different political allegiances, he finds it heartening that on this issue they are happy to share a platform.

He added: “There is much talk of how divisive the referendum campaign has become, but in practice the vast majority of senior politicians from all the main parties except UKIP are united in wanting us to remain in Europe.”
