RESIDENTS have been warned to watch out for scam junk mail coming from close to home.False letters requesting money or offering 'prizes' have often been associated with foreign-based fraudulent companies.A new set of letters, shown to the Herald by one East Devon resident, claim to be from the 'Exeter Prize Register' in an apparent effort to gain credibility through a local name. The company behind the letters offers prizes worth thousands of pounds, so long as recipients call a hotline number.Police have urged residents to ignore any unsolicited mail or phone calls offering goods or prizes, with huge sums of money stolen annually as a result of such scams.A representative from Devon Trading Standards yesterday (Tuesday) spoke to pensioners in Honiton about popular scams - and how to avoid falling victim. The talk was organised by Age Concern (Devon).
