A celebration of life and love for one man has raised more than £4,000 for a charity based in Exmouth helping Devon’s suicide bereaved.

The family and friends of Pete Newton, from Colyton, recently marked his life with a darts tournament and an evening of entertainment, raising £4126 for Pete’s Dragons, in Exeter Road, Exmouth; the only specific suicide bereavement charity in Devon offering support throughout the whole county.

Alison Jordan, Pete’s Dragons CEO, said: “After losing Pete just over a year ago, the family became acutely aware of the lack of support available both in terms of suicide prevention and suicide bereavement, so when a couple of his friends decided to host a darts competition in memory of him, it provided the perfect opportunity to raise both money and awareness of these issues.”

She added: The Pete’s Dragons team were delighted to receive this boost to their funds.

“The charity is reliant on fundraising of this nature to survive and receives no statutory funding.

“What we most love about this story is that Pete’s family, friends and community created a fun filled day of special memories, the smiles on their faces as they described the day to me were a pleasure to see.

“We are honoured to have been the charity they chose to support.”

Pete Newton’s family and friends held a darts tournament at the Kingfisher Inn, at Colyton, followed by an evening of entertainment and live music by band Extractor, plus a raffle of prizes donated by local businesses and members of the public.

Alison said the event was supported by all who knew Pete when he lived in Colyton.

Alison said: “The event was supported by the whole community of Colyton, as well as surrounding ones, in which he was very popular.

“It raised an incredible £4126 for Pete’s Dragons, a local based charity that provides comfort after suicide loss.

“The family would particularly like to thank Pete’s friends who organised the event, the landlord and landlady of the venue and the band members, but also send a huge thank you to everyone who helped, donated and attended.”
