East Devon’s community development worker, Alex Gibson, described the event as a great way to get to know people in the local area.

Two of East Devon District Council’s (EDDC) services – community development and countryside – joined forces recently for a fun activities based event involving circus skills and bird-feeder making for the local community in Honiton.

At least five families, including grandparents and teenagers, attended the event in Jerrard Close, which was voted a great success with lashings of refreshments including delicious cakes and a terrific community atmosphere.

The children thoroughly enjoyed learning how to make bird feeders with countryside education ranger Penny Evans – the majority made at least two to take home with them, while teenagers rose to the challenge of hula hoops.

East Devon’s community development worker, Alex Gibson, described the event as a great way to get to know people in the local area.

She said: “We want to attract more people to come to the events we are holding at local nature reserves, so this event at Jerrard Close was a perfect taster for all the fun, free outdoor educational experiences that we and the Countryside team are organising.

“This is about encouraging as many people as possible to get outdoors and learn more about the wonderful countryside of East Devon.

“We are keen to raise awareness of the health benefits that being outside in the fresh air can offer, while at the same time giving people the chance to acquire new skills through cultural and leisure based activities.”
