The work of the Bishop of Crediton has been celebrated by well-wishers at a special farewell ceremony in Feniton.

Bishop Bob Evens attended the service at Feniton Church of England Primary School - marking his final visit before he retires in October.

The primary school and guests, including the Reverend Cate Edmonds, parents and school governors, presented him with gifts such as a special book of pictures, gardening vouchers and a 10-year-old bottle of port from the school’s governors.

Members of the school singing club gave a special performance of Raise me up.

Principal Bernard Quanaifia, who is visiting from the Norman Palmer School in the Solomon Islands, gave him a cross which was made by his wife, and joined the Mr Evens in a prayer in his native language of Pigeon.

Mr Evens leaves the church after 35 years of service and the communities of Devon but says he felt the time was right after turning 65.

He has been in his current post for eight years where he has served East, Mid and North Devon.

“I grew up in Devon and have a great love for it and its people. Being in this school fills me with hope as you look at the smiling faces and see them catching glimpses of God’s love for them,” says Mr Evens. I feel a huge sense of privilege. People have given me so much love and I have tried to return it.”

He told the Midweek Herald that he has enjoyed being able to link with people both inside and outside of the church and says it will be something he will miss.

In his retirement Mr Evens hopes to tour the country in his caravan with his wife.
