Family activity day proves a hit for visitors in Lyme Regis.

A fascinating time was enjoyed by visitors to Lyme Regis during a special family fossil day, held at the resort’s museum.

Ammonite polishing was a big hit with around 250 children and adults taking part in the activity on the sea-side terrace of the museum.

As part of the polishing process, the fossils are first sliced in half, making the coiled inside chambers visible.

This surface is then polished by sanding in a circular motion, then fine, wetted sandpaper and a sanding wheel are used to complete the process.

More family fossil days are planned for tomorrow (Thursday, August 9) and Saturday, August 25.

Museum geologist Paddy Howe, with fossil experts Chris Andrew and Brandon Lennon, will lead the fun, answer questions and be on hand to share their fossil knowledge. There will be free admission to the museum.

Other events are scheduled during the rest of the month, including rockpooling on Broad Ledge at 3.30pm today (Wednesday), and guided walks around Lyme Regis every Saturday from 3pm.

A mini-masterclass, Facts on Fossils, will take place at the Langmoor Room on Marine Parade at 2.30pm on Saturday, August 11, Sunday 26 and Monday 27.
