Cutbacks could see departure of town’s most experienced police officer, councillors fear.

HONITON Police Station is to benefit from extended opening hours - as it rises to the challenge of becoming the main front desk for the entire district.

Counters at stations in Axminster, Seaton, Ottery St Mary and Sidmouth are set to close. Inspector Antonia Weeks told The Midweek Herald she expects the changes to take effect from around April next year.

Meanwhile, concern has been expressed that Pc Ian Atyeo, Honiton’s most experienced police officer, could be forced into retirement as part of a spending review.

Honiton Town Council was dismayed to hear the news at a meeting on Monday.

Councillors are concerned that Pc Atyeo is a figure people know and trust in the town and cannot be replaced.
