DEVON and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service has sent out a message of thanks after no major fires were reported during the Christmas holiday period.From December 24 to January 1, there were 71 small fires in the whole of the service area that involved property or vehicles, compared to 105 in the same period in 2006.Garry Alford, prevention manager, said today "This is an encouraging result. "It shows that people are not only listening to our fire safety messages, but are taking positive action to avoid fires." David Hodge, the home safety visit manager for Devon & Somerset Fire and Rescue Service, added: "Since the combination of the Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Services on April 1, last year, we have completed approximately 6,000 home safety visits.
