Firefighters battle in vain to save farmhouse

This is the fire-ravaged of ruin of Gittisham Farm.
The house, occupied by the Hayman family, was destroyed when a blaze ripped through the property early last Friday.
Firefighters from across the district responded to 999 calls shortly after 5am and arrived to find the proerty “well alight”.
A spokesman for Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service said the property sustained 100 per cent fire damage. An outbuilding was also damaged.
“Upon arrival, the incident commander requested an aerial platform ladder which was used as a water tower,” the spoksman added. “Two main water jets and two hose reel jets were used, along with extension ladders.”
Water was drawn from a street hydrant and, four hours after the fire was reported, firefighters were still at the scene, damping down.

The spokesman said the cause of the fire was not yet known.
Specialist equipment was sent to the scene from the fire brigade’s Danes Castle station in Exeter.
