IT is not too late for Honiton Town Council to take up the plight of vulnerable people affected by the introduction of charges for use of an emergency lifeline operated by East Devon District Council.

That was what former three times mayor of Honiton Joanna Bull told the annual meeting of electors on Monday night.

She made an impassioned plea to town councillors to take up the issue, saying the elderly and infirm are saving the country billions of pounds by maintaining their independence.

"It takes great courage to stay on your own when you have fallen flat on your face," she said.

Her comments prompted a round of applause from the public gallery.

The council is to raise the issue of the Home Safeguard alarm system with health chiefs at a forthcoming meeting.
