The lot sparked a bidding frenzy when it went under the hammer.

A former rifle range in Honiton sparked explosive bidding when it trebled its freehold guide price to sell for £154,000 at auction.

The site went under the hammer with the former Honiton Air Training Corps offices in St Mark’s Road.

It also included a canteen, parade hall, classrooms, squadron office and briefing room.

The centre was among the West Country lots listed for auction on May 4 by Clive Emson Land and Property Auctioneers.

It was bought by a local purchaser with various property interests.

Auctioneer Scott Gray said: “This unusual opportunity certainly triggered strong bidding.

“By the time the gavel came down the property had more than trebled the lower end of its guide and demonstrates the continuing strength of interest in sites of this kind.

“The property now offers the new owner myriad opportunities in commercial, residential, or even leisure and recreational sectors subject to the necessary consents.”
