A FORMER student of Axe Valley Community College in Axminster explains why head teacher Martin Smith was right to tackle the issue of drugs in school:

"As a teenager and former student of The Axe Valley Community College myself, I think that is great that Martin Smith is tackling the issue of drugs in school.

"From my experiences with other local schools, it has become apparent that this is not an issue faced by just Axe Valley, and that in fact Mr Smith seems to be going the right away about dealing with the problem.

"It appears to me that other local schools seem to care more about protecting their reputations as opposed to actually dealing with what is being faced by their own students. It seems as though locally negative stories seem to come out more frequently about this school, as it communicates with parents about such issues. I think it is about time that local schools, other than the Axe Valley Community College, began to deal with the issues facing their students without a fear of receiving negative publicity.
