FREE tap water is available in all pubs, clubs and restaurants in West Dorset.

The new law was introduced earlier this month to encourage sensible drinking and has been welcomed by West Dorset District Council.

Failure to comply with the new conditions could lead to maximum penalties of a 20,000 fine or six months in prison.

Jenna Rawle, district council Senior Licensing Officer, said: "Providing free water will hopefully encourage people to space out their alcoholic drinks and prevent drunkenness.

"This is a great step in helping to prevent crime and disorder by promoting sensible drinking. All premises affected by the changes will be advised in writing shortly about the exact requirements."

The new law, which was introduced on 6 April 2010, means anywhere that sells alcohol for consumption on the premises must provide free tap water to their customers if asked.

The new conditions, which are part of the Policing and Crime Act 2009, will also put a stop to irresponsible drinks promotions such as 'all you can drink for 10' and 'women drink for free' that can encourage people to consume more alcohol than they usually would.

Two further conditions to encourage sensible drinking will also come into force on October 1. These relate to checking of age identification and making small measures of alcohol available, including a 125ml glass of wine.
