WHITFORD went stateside last weekend with a US-themed Scarecrow Festival.

The village hosted over 100 scarecrows - dressed as anything from cowboys and indians, Marilyn Monroe, Abraham Lincoln, and even King Kong.

Up to 6,000 visitors turned out for the day, including two Americans who made a special trip to take part in the community event.

Couple Gerry and Doris Bean, from Colorado Springs, made the journey after forging a friendship with one of the organisers, Graham Bean, more than three years ago.

Graham said: "We met when we were on holiday in the States and Doris was a tour director. We had the link with the name and kept in touch ever since.

"They offered to help with the event, sending flags over. Then completely out of the blue, about three weeks ago, they emailed saying they had booked their flights and were coming over.

"They worked very hard - both pitching in - but really had a good time. They made it good for everybody else.

"The days went very well. Everybody enjoyed it and there were just happy, smiling faces walking around. People of all ages had big smiles on their faces.

"We were lucky with the weather and had an absolutely superb weekend. Also, I would like to thank the Herald, which has always been very supportive and we appreciate that."

The festival is free, apart from a small fee on the Saturday afternoon for the Produce Association annual flower and produce show. People are asked to make a donation for a trail sheet.

It has been running since 2004, and raises money for local organisations and to help maintain the village hall.
