The Axe Valley Centre of the National Trust was given an informative talk by Laurence Hitchcock about Axminster Carpets.
Members were told founder Thomas Whitty’s family name can be found as far back as 1555. Many great houses have Axminster carpets, including Powderham Castle.
The company had royal visits, George III - whilst in Weymouth - and also Princess Anne in 1996.
The meeting was given details of the manufacturing processes of the carpets. The large audience was very appreciative.
