Support needed for Honiton Christmas Lights Appeal.
Honiton residents are being urged to switch on to the Christmas lights appeal and ensure the town really sparkles this year.
A final push is now under way by Go Festive – Honiton’s Christmas lights committee - to boost funds in time for the festive season.
Go Festive teamed up with the Midweek Herald in July to launch the Honiton Christmas Lights Appeal.
Currently, there is more than £2,000 available for a festive display, including £1,000 donated by Lidl and a further £1,000 made available from Honiton Town Council. A further £50 has been donated by Everys in Honiton.
“We hope that now Christmas is on its way and is visible in the shops that the festive spirit will spread in the town and that everyone will come together to support the Honiton Christmas Lights Appeal,” said a Go Festive spokesman.
“We want to thank everyone for their support so far. It has not been an easy task but we still need the help of the local community to make sure we raise as much as we can to have a brilliant Christmas lights display this year.”
The committee hopes to be able to purchase lights for the town, which could be used for future years. However, it can only afford a limited number of lights - unless more money is raised.
Go Festive has held a number of fundraising events in the town including a Christmas lights quiz and most recently a festive trolley dash.
The Christmas trolley dash, which took place last Saturday, at The Co-operative store in Lace Walk, was won by local resident Mary Dixon.
Mary’s daughter Jane Small was given the challenge of filling up the trolley with as much as possible in 30 seconds. The total of the shopping dash came in at £175.53.
Go Festive added: “We would like to say a big thank you to Mick Alphonse and his staff at The Co-operative, town crier Dave Retter, and to everyone who bought raffle tickets and supported the trolley dash and the appeal. We also want to thank all the businesses that have supported us either through donating money or raffle prizes. And a thank you to Honiton Chamber of Commerce and Carol Gilson for their help.”
