Honiton’s mayor is calling on people to help ‘yarn-bomb’ the Thelma Hulbert Gallery’s (THG) garden to recognise the work carried out in town to help people living with dementia.
Councillor Caroline Kolek said: “We are asking the community to come to the gallery anytime between 11am and 3pm on Wednesday, February 17, and February 18 to make piece of woolwork. Anyone can take part and all ages are invited.”
Yarn-bombing is a type of street art that employs colourful displays of knitted or crocheted yarn, rather than paint or chalk.
Mrs Kolek’s call was inspired after she saw a ‘yarn-bombed’ memory tree in Stratford-upon-Avon last year.
With the help of THG and Honiton Dementia Action Alliance (DAA), she wants to dress THG’s garden in knitted items, with every piece representing a personal memory or the memory of a loved one.
Heather Penwarden, chair of Honiton DAA, said: “This is a wonderful project to highlight the work of the DAA and help raise awareness of what it is like for people living with dementia in our town.”
