New grant scheme to allow careers to take a break.

Carers in Devon are being encouraged to take advantage of a grant that will help them take a break from caring.

A month-long campaign has been launched to ensure carers are aware of the help available, which includes a flexible breaks grant.

The grant allows carers to spend the money of things that will give them a break from their caring responsibilities, such as a weekend away, day trip, new computer or equipment for a new hobby.

Carers interested in getting involved with the scheme are urged to contact the Devon Carers Centre, who can offer advise on help and support available.

Devon County Councillor Stuart Barker, the cabinet member responsible for carers, said: “Often people do not recognise themselves as carers, especially those who are looking after their spouses or children.”

“The flexible breaks grant really can be used for whatever a person needs to give them a break from caring.

“We have helped many people gain a bit of time for themselves and we’re hoping this campaign will encourage others to do the same.”

Devon County Council and NHS Devon have jointly commissioned the Devon Carers Centre to administer 360,000 of funding.
