The discussion about church vandals and seeking a vote from your readers on the lines suggested (recent Herald web poll) was absurd. The likelihood is that the vandals in question were poorly educated, uncouth youths, with no sense of purpose and nothing better to do than to look for soft targets to cause trouble and while away there useless lives. It is unlikely that their mischief was directed specifically at a church and, who knows, they could even be Christians - albeit with a few too many lagers under their belts. They are merely a sad reflection of the society we live in and deciding whether or not they should "go to hell" solves precisely nothing. It also presupposes that there is a hell, which is a question of religious belief and a subject for a wholly different debate.Geoffrey CassenHoniton
