Teen is first winner.
An East Devon teenager, who funded a day trip for people suffering from brain injuries after spending the day in a wheelchair, has been awarded the Midweek Herald’s first Good Egg accolade.
If you know someone in the community who has done a good deed for others that deserves recognition, let The Herald know.
The Good Egg awards will be printed to spread the word of each selfless act – no matter how small the deed.
Learning Access Employment Programme student George Smith, 17, raised £107 for Headway Devon – a charity which supports adults and children with brain injuries – after visiting brain injury sufferers at the charity’s centre in Honiton.
The cash George raised will fund a minibus for the group to enjoy a day out.
The teenager is further boosting funds by organising donations of plants from local businesses for Headway’s Honiton day centre’s plant sale.
Angela McBrayne, of E2E, which supports 16-19 year olds in education, employment and training nominated George.
She said the teenager had ‘shone’ in his charity work, spending the day in a wheelchair after a tutorial about the brain injury charity.
A visit was arranged for George to meet clients at the Honiton centre. When he asked them what they would like most, the answer was ‘a day out’.
Angela said: “He was so moved that he wanted to get involved.
“George set about arranging the event, something he wanted to do quickly.
“He felt that spending the day in a wheelchair would give him a better insight of what wheelchair users experience.
“He came across many problems – wheelchairs not fitting under work tables, kerbs not dropped enough – and he also got stuck in a lift,” she added.
“George raised £107, which is enough to cover the cost of a mini bus for the clients to have a day out.
“He has also exceeded this by organising plant donations for their plant sale from Otter Nurseries and Homebase.
“He is continuing the good work – something he feels he wants to do.”
