Former Honiton woman still climbs stairs and is hard to beat at Scrabble.

A remarkable former Honiton woman has celebrated her 108th birthday.

Keen gardener and Scrabble player Hilda Joyce Lane celebrated the milestone with her family on January 5.

She still climbs stairs and enjoys going out for Sunday lunch.

Born near Axminster, she went into service before marrying farmer William Lane, of Ellishayes, Combe Raleigh.

The couple retired to Honiton, where Hilda was a member of the Women’s Institute.

She now lives with her daughter in Bradninch, near Exeter.

Son Brian Lane said: “She still walks up stairs and it is a job to beat her at Scrabble. You can’t put one over on her.”

Hilda and her late husband had four children, three of whom survive.

She now has nine grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

A party attended by family members was held in Bradninch.
