However, the High Street shop will remain a retail unit and antique dealer Nick Thompson will remain in business and could open a shop elsewhere in the town.

Mr Thompson, who has traded antiques in Honiton for 10 years, said his decision to sell the shop was not connected to the current economic climate.

He said: "Antique prices dropped five years ago. That didn't turn out to be a bad thing.

"It is easier to sell and now is the time to buy the better stuff.

"People have got the money, but they are spending it more carefully. They are less impulsive and looking for investments.
