UNEMPLOYED people of all ages are gaining new qualifications, thanks to a Honiton charity shop.

Cancer Research, which has had a retail unit in Lace Walk ever since the shopping centre opened 20 years ago, is providing volunteers with professional qualifications.

Five local people will embark on NVQ courses in retail at the shop on March 25.

Rachel Muggeridge, 20, is already studying for an NVQ1 at the shop.

"I have already studied for NVQs before, so I know how they work," she told the Midweek Herald.

"I want to go into retail, because I like clothes."

Shop manager Linda Stevens said: "We are always looking for volunteers and, by offering training, we can give people that extra knowledge.

"An NVQ is a good certificate to have, if you want to go into retail.

"People can study for their NVQ 1 and 2 with us and then go on, if they wish, to study for a qualification in retail management."

Linda added: "It doesn't affect people's benefit claims and I'm really pleased that we have got five people joining us later in the month."

The shop is always keen to receive donations of good quality clothing, fashion accessories and books. A collection service is available to those who are unable to bring donations to the shop. To arrange a collection, call (01404) 44002.

Cancer Research is staging a fun day in Honiton on Saturday (March 13). A tombola and raffle will be among the attractions at the recently revamped shop and promotions will take place in the town centre.
