The Mayor, Councillor Vivienne Ash, raised the issue with police last week, saying she had received reports of a gun being used in the vicinity of the bridge in Clapper Lane.
But she admitted: "It is disputable if it was on private or public land."
Pc Ian Atyeo said he was unaware of an incident involving a shotgun, but added: "When we grant a firearms licence, questions are asked about where a person is going to be firing.
