THE annual allowance that can be claimed by town councillors in Honiton will not go up next year, in spite of a last minute bid by Councillor Vera Howard to have them increased to a recom-mended amount of 305.

Councillors carry out their work on a voluntary basis, but can claim the allowance to help offset travelling and other costs they incur.

Councillor Howard's proposal was seconded by Councillor John Taylor, but was defeated when it came to the vote.

"I feel we've got to set an example to the town in these hard times and not take liberties," said Councillor Ron Farnham, who voted against.
