HISTORY could be repeating itself in Honiton, according to the deputy mayor.

Councillor Peter Fleming is concerned Honiton Town Council is having to persuade people to support plans for a community centre in much the same way that the late Juanita Maxwell Phillips rallied the public to support her proposals for the purchase of Allhallows Playing Field in 1938.

At the time, Juanita was Mayor of Honiton but her fellow councillors and business owners in the town feared the cost to the public purse would be too much of a drain.

"History is repeating itself," said Councillor Fleming.

"Juanita Maxwell Phillips had to fight to get Allhallows Playing Field. Now it is an asset to the town, in the same way that the community centre will be."

The mayor, Councillor Vivienne Ash, said: "We are doing this for the future of the town.

"We are trying to look ahead at how the town is developing.

"Now we need to encourage other people to be forward thinking, too.
