Honiton’s Thelma Hulbert Gallery (THG) is celebrating after it recorded its best-ever week for visitor numbers.

More than 700 people flocked to the gallery in Dowell Street, which was filled with clocks as part of international artist Luke Jerram’s Harrison’s Garden exhibit.

This, coupled with a spooky fun-filled Hallowe’en spectacular at the gallery, helped bring in 742 visitors in just one week.

Angela Blackwell, THG’s curator, praised the support from the community, which helped clock donations pour into the gallery.

“We were overwhelmed by the public’s generosity in supporting our call-out for clocks for this installation,” she said.

“Many of those who donated came to see their clocks in the installation and participate in a really exciting week of activities, talks and workshops.

“We welcomed 742 visitors in total – our best week ever!

“There’s new interest in the installation touring to other national venues too.”

The installation featured 1,000 clocks, many of which were donated by the public, and was created as part of the national Museums at Night festival.

Mr Jerram added: “The whole week has been epic but great fun. I really enjoyed working with THG.

“Museums at Night gave me an opportunity to create a new artwork and test it out - and it went like clockwork!

“If the installation tours the UK, I hope that Harrison’s Garden will grow, with more and more clocks being added to the collection. I hope to eventually get 10,000 clocks for display.

“I would like to also thank the public for their support and, of course, their wonderful, and often, curious clock donations!”

To celebrate the Museums at Night festival, THG held a talk by Luke Jerram and a spectacular Hallowe’en event including kids’ art activities and stayed open till late with music from a DJ, pop-up cocktail bar and wood-fired pizza oven.

The event garnered plenty of positive feedback, with one visitor saying: “Wow! We are honoured to have this in Honiton. It’s a superb installation and great Hallowe’en event. Well done, THG !”
