The incident happened in a two-storey detached house in Sidmouth Road, on Friday (January 1), at 6.20pm.
Fire crews from Honiton and Ottery St Mary attended the blaze, and used small tools to make access to the boiler.
The fire was spreading in the cavity wall, so firefighters isolated the gas and electric in the house before using a hose reel and thermal imaging cameras to fight the flames.
After working for an hour to extinguish the blaze, crews removed debris from the loft space using small tools and damped down the scene.
A spokesman for Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that the loft space was 30 per cent damaged by the fire.
Damage was also suffered in the first floor ground floor and garage.
