EAST Devon District Council, which owns the business centre at Heathpark, in Honiton, says marriage and civil partnership ceremonies were never planned for the new registrar's office there.

In a statement, a council spokesman said: "The agreement made with Devon County Council was to provide accommodation for the registrar's staff, not a room for public ceremonies.

"We understand that the County will be making other arrangements for weddings and similar events."

n DEVON County Council has confirmed that a ceremony room, for marriages and civil partnerships, has yet to be found for Honiton Register Office.

The service moved to East Devon Business Centre, at Heathpark Industrial Estate, on Saturday (August 1), and will be only able to deal with the registration of births and deaths.

East Devon District Council gave the registrar six months notice to move out of Elmfield House, in Dowell Street, to make way for an expansion of the Thelma Hulbert Gallery, which is being supported by the Arts Council.
