HONITON is "riddled with potholes", the town council has heard.

Councillor David Foster made the claim at a meeting last week, asking county councillor Paul Diviani: "Is the council still tackling them?"

Councillor Diviani, who is one of those responsible for the county's winter road maintenance programmes, revealed 14,000 potholes have been filled in the past few months.

He explained: "We are doing a quick fill to stop accidents and then going back to do a tighter repair."

Councillor Diviani would like to see a specialist team put together to tackle potholes, using state-of-the-art machinery. "There are better methods around and I am very conscious that the potholes are there," he said. "But it is not just Devon, it is the whole of the country."

Councillor Ron Farnham drew attention to the large potholes at the entrance to Lace Walk car park.
