A HONITON couple will celebrate their 70th wedding anniversary on Friday. Jack and Madge Wicks met in Reading and married there on August 7, in 1939. Just a month later, Jack joined the RAF and served his country until the end of the Second World War.
A HONITON couple will celebrate their 70th wedding anniversary on Friday.
Jack and Madge Wicks met in Reading and married there on August 7, in 1939.
Just a month later, Jack joined the RAF and served his country until the end of the Second World War.
After various jobs, the couple ran a grocery store in the 1950s.
Holidays were in Devon and the couple were regular visitors to Andrewshayes camping site, Dalwood.
In 1963, in the winter of the Big Freeze, Jack and Madge fulfilled their dream by selling the shop and moving to Offwell.
They took an active part in village life and Madge was a regular at the WI, whist drives, annual fete and flower show. For a time, she was the president of the village football club.
About 20 years ago, Jack and Madge moved to Honiton, where they were, again, active members of the community.
In May this year, Jack celebrated his 92nd birthday and, in June, Madge reached 90.
They have two sons, two daughters, five grandchildren and one great grandchild.
A family celebration is planned and yet another greeting card from the Queen is awaited.
