A local charity successfully bid for the lease on the building.

One of Honiton’s most iconic buildings - which has remained vacant for nearly two years - has now got new tenants.

Bloodbikes charity Devon Freewheelers will move into Honiton Tourist Information Centre after pipping several interested parties to win the bid for the lease.

The charity, which was founded by Dan Lavery, managed to secure the building with funds raised from it’s main fundraising event - Honiton Sausage and Cider Festival.

Mr Lavery said: “Honiton needs a TIC, and we need a central point in the town where the local community can walk in and support our fundraising activities. I’m in discussions with various authorities and organisations in the best way forward for this project - but I have a vision of both needs eventually being achieved under one roof, benefiting the charity and of course the communities we serve.”

Mr Lavery is now welcoming ny local businesses who would like to offer support in the opening of the building.

He added: “It’s been empty a long time, and its bare.

“We need everything - so whatever you have to offer, we could probably us it! From carpets to coffee cups - and if we can’t use it in the building, we could probably use it for fundraising.”

The TIC consists of a store room, a bathroom, a kitchen and two offices.

“It’s a perfect central location’ for their volunteers on standby duty and welcomes anyone who sees the response bike sat there to come and have a look around,” Mr Lavery added.

The Freewheelers hope to open the building next month.

Any offers of support, from volunteering your time as fundraisers, offering a service or donating an item to use in the building can be emailed to fundraising@bloodbikesdevon.org.uk or by completing the Contact Us page on the Freewheelers website www.devonfreewheelers.org.uk
