HONITON is to get sports facilities it can be proud of, town councillors were told this week.A 25-acre site near Honiton Golf Club has been confirmed as the location for a new sports hub for the town.Bob Buxton and Dr Jeremy Gibson, of Honiton Development Trust, revealed the good news when they addressed a meeting of the town council's policy committee on Monday.Mr Buxton said the deal was subject to land swap negotiations with East Devon district council, but that he expected the first pitches to be in use at the site next year."We are in discussions about access and a tree survey, and the possibility of creating a footpath from the town," said Mr Buxton.A sub-committee is to be formed to move forward a grant application for the cost of the path, which will run to the sports hub from the Glen.Cash is to be sought from �2.4m given to the East Devon AONB. Plans for the sports hub, which will include a pavilion, will go out to public consultation during an open evening in Honiton, possibly as early as the end of next month. Former plans to build an Olympic training ground at Weston fell flat.Mr Buxton said: "We could have had a facility the world could be proud of. Now we've got something the people of Honiton can be proud of.
